About

Community Clay! by the District Clay Center brings clay and ceramics to the youth of DC, with a focus on Wards 7 and 8. Through a variety of partnerships in the District, Community Clay! creates opportunities for the joy of clay through after-school programming and teacher training.

Our current program brings to two Community Clay teachers each week to teach kids at THEARC facility.   Our teachers transport clay, tools and materials to THEARC each week and bring back finished work to District Clay for firing.  These free classes fill up every semester and we have been able to teach hundreds of kids about the wonderful world of clay over the last two years.

This fall we are planning a major expansion of Community Clay into DC Public Schools.  Over the past 10 years, DC Public Schools has been rebuilding and renovating their schools, including installing electric kilns.

Over the summer, we will be working with DC Public Schools on plans to use District Clay teachers and resources to deepen kids' experiences with clay.  By working alongside public school art teachers and students we want to spread the wonder of clay to hundreds and hundreds of local kids.

Heading into the 2020-2021 school year, we will develop clay projects for DCPS students to do whether learning is in the classroom or at home. As the needs of the upcoming school year become clear, this will likely include teacher training, both in person and on-line, and District Clay assistance with materials that students can use while learning from home.
