What We Do
Through our Community Clay! Program, District Clay provides teachers, clay, tools and glazes to kids in the DC region that otherwise do not have access to clay.

Classes can happen at the District Clay Center or we can travel to area schools and other locations.  We currently offer classes in partnership with ArtReach at THEARC facility in SE DC where we teach kids on Wednesday afternoons.  Once kids make the work, we transport it back to District Clay Center for firing in our kilns.

Some comments from our students:

“I enjoy it because it’s really fun and it’s really happy to see our own concept and we get to paint and decorate our art and
make all kinds of stuff.”

“I like the more challenging projects because it expands your mind.”

“It helps all the stress come out. It makes me happy to see all of y’all’s faces every day.”

Additionally, Community Clay! has provided teacher training opportunities to ensure that teachers in our area have a firm grounding in ceramic techniques, equipment and kiln firing. We provide this resource in both traditional ceramics, and in air-dry/Sculpey media to accommodate Distance Learning.

We are currently working with DC Public Schools to provide new opportunities for kids to use clay in the 2020-21 School Year.  Please help us fund our outreach to DC Public Schools by donating here.

Classes are free and are funded by your donations and financial support by the District Clay Center.
